Oct 01, 2013  |  Press Releases
Featured Event to be held in New York City, October 18

Prager and Fenton LLP, an affiliate of Prager Metis International specializing in  accounting, auditing and advisory services for for the entertainment industry, will once again be a featured speaker at the 2013 Entertainment Business Law Seminar, presented by the CMJ Music Marathon and the New York State Bar Association. The all-day event, to be held at the NYU Kimmel Center on October 18, features a series of panel discussions with top legal, accounting, and entertainment industry experts on pertinent topics such as foreign touring, direct digital licensing, project funding, financing of film tax credits, risk management at live venues, changes in  copyright, do-it-yourself business models, and data security.  David Israelite, the President and CEO of the National Music Publishers’ Association will be the lunch time Keynote Speaker.

This is the third consecutive year that Prager and Fenton has been a sponsor of the Entertainment Business Law Seminar, with partner Christopher Hull from their New York City office serving as a co-chair for the event. “This seminar is an extremely well-respected event in the entertainment industry,” says Hull, As co-chair, he assisted in the planning, design, and promotion of the seminar. “We’re really trying to get more CPA’s to participate,” states Hull. “There are over 250 attorneys who attend each year and we’d like to see similar numbers of accountants represented at the seminar. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only full day entertainment industry event in the tri-state area where CPA’s can earn CPE credits.  It provides participants with a great opportunity to join the discussion and keep current on entertainment industry issues, while also earning  CPE credits.” Additionally, there are outstanding networking opportunities to meet and speak with attorneys and other professionals in the entertainment industry. The seminar provides six hours of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits for attorneys and seven hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits for accountants.

In its effort to meet the needs of entertainment professionals, CMJ goes to great lengths to touch various aspects of the entertainment industry, so while Hull has in the past spoken on the royalty related issues in which he specializes, his involvement this year is as a program chair.

Hal Peterson, a partner at Prager and Fenton’s New York office, will moderate the panel Film Finance: It’s To Your Credit – Getting the Full Use of Tax Credits for Film Production, which will probe the federal and tax credits available to film and TV producers, and the structures for using tax credits to obtain financing. Peterson, a CPA, practices primarily in the area of taxation and tax compliance and serves several clients in the entertainment industry.

Simon Winters, a partner at the Prager and Fenton London office, will be a panelist on Foreign Touring: You’ll Suffer Taxation Without Proper Representation, which discusses strategies to minimize taxes for recording artists touring outside the U.S. Winters is a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) with over 20 years experience providing accounting and tax advice, principally to clients in the media and entertainment industry. He has been advising U.S. artists on foreign taxes since joining Prager and Fenton in 2008.

“This will be the first time I will be attending the CMJ Music Marathon, let alone speak at it. I am really excited by the opportunity and look forward to sharing the stage with such distinguished panelists on what I hope will be an informative discussion,” says Winters.

“As fiscal and legal regulations are constantly changing,” he continues, "I welcome the chance to exchange ideas with fellow professionals on their experiences with international touring. It would be great if I can directly assist any attendees or their clients with their touring plans.”
